How to order wine on a date without overthinking it

Wine on a date

Ordering a drink on a date is one of those small moments that somehow feels bigger than it is. You glance at the menu, say something confidently (or pretend to), and move on.

Not in a serious way… but also a little bit. Here's what to order — and what it says about you.

A crisp white
Sauvignon Blanc · Pinot Grigio

This is one of the easiest and safest orders you can make. It's on almost every menu, it pairs well with most lighter meals, and it's hard to get wrong. If you're unsure what to order, this is always a good place to start.

If you want to keep it simple, just say: "I'll do a Sauvignon Blanc" or "Pinot Grigio, please." Clean, easy to drink, and you won't feel like you're forcing anything.

This says: classic, confident, and always a good call.
Rosé
Always a good middle ground

Rosé is another safe and easy option, especially if you want something a little more in-between. It's usually light, slightly refreshing, and works well whether you ordered food or not. It's also very common on menus, so you won't have to search for it.

If you're not sure what you're in the mood for, rosé is a good middle ground that feels effortless.

This says: good taste and zero drama. A winning combo.
Red wine
Pinot Noir · Cabernet · Merlot

Red wine can feel a little more intimidating, but it doesn't have to be. If you want something easy, go with Pinot Noir — it's lighter and more versatile. If you want something a bit stronger, Cabernet or Merlot are both very standard and widely available.

A simple way to order: "Do you have a Pinot Noir by the glass?" That phrasing alone makes it feel more natural, even if you're still figuring things out.

Just make sure you don't turn your mouth red drinking a dark red wine!

This says: you know what you like and you're not afraid to order it.
Sparkling
Prosecco · Champagne

This is an easy choice if you don't want to think too much about pairing with food. Sparkling wine works whether you're eating or not, and it's usually offered by the glass at most places. It's light, simple, and always feels appropriate.

If you see "Prosecco" or "Brut," you're in a safe range. Don't be afraid to ditch the orange juice and drink some bubbles!

This says: you're here to have a good time. Great energy.
