What is ABV and why do I care?

ABV wine guide

Okay so you've definitely seen this on a wine bottle before:

12.5% 13.9% 14.8%

…and just ignored it. That number is ABV — and it's the reason behind that "why does this taste like juice" moment or the "wait, why am I tipsy already?" feeling. ABV just means Alcohol By Volume.

The difference between sipping and feeling cute vs. one glass and suddenly you're texting people you shouldn't.

What the numbers actually mean

Higher ABV = stronger wine = hits faster. Lower ABV = lighter wine = easier to sip.

11–12% Light, easy, won't sneak up on you
12.5–13.5% Normal — most wines you'll order fall here
14%+ Strong… proceed accordingly

What to reach for

If you want something lighter

  • Sauvignon Blanc
  • Pinot Grigio
  • Rosé
  • Prosecco

If you want something stronger

  • Cabernet Sauvignon
  • Malbec
  • Some Chardonnays
  • Red blends

The more ya know the better. It's just one of those little things that helps you stay in control of your night. Because sometimes the problem isn't you… it's that you accidentally picked a 15% wine and didn't know what you were getting into.
